We finally got some rain today. I spent the afternoon trimming horse hooves as they all needed it again and the fields are two wet to garden or fence easily. Unfortunately, after going through the month of April and most of May with healthy hooves, we've had a few abscesses the last couple weeks. I feel I was getting a little lax on applying the durasole and need to step that up again.
Last time I trimmed I "awarded" the horses that stood the best with mention in the blog. This time I'll give them a grade. It helped that it was a cool afternoon with minimal flies; so the trimming went relatively fast.
A's: Tucker, Charlie, Derby, Dixie, Sadie, Allie, Simon, Topper, Shammi, and Jacqui.
B's: Jake and Judy (they are just so big and heavy that even if they only lean on you a little bit it is difficult to hold the leg up).
Gypsy: Who gave good effort and did great except had trouble putting weight on one of her feet for very long and almost toppled over on me. At 37 years old, you'd expect a little arthritis.
C's: Sage; did OK, but he gets impatient and it takes longer to remove and nail back on the shoes.
Davinci: Jerked back a couple times, but I'd tied him to a post in the field because he was in the far corner and I think he was intimidated when other horses got too close.
Overall, though, they were very well behaved. I can't believe it's been around 8 weeks since they were last trimmed. Glad to have it done again.
Photo: Guess who's front feet these are?
Answer: The 7th one mentioned getting an "A".
